BJP may delimit Lok Sabha constituencies before 2024 elections: Tharoor......

Chennai: MP Shashi Tharoor said that the Narendra Modi government may bring in constitutional amendments to prepone the Lok Sabha constituency delimitation.

It is a serious threat as the Southern state’s will no longer be an effective bloc in the parliament, he feels.

Tharoor said this at a webinar titled “Modi’s India” hosted by the Dravidian Professionals Forum the other day. Tamil Nadu finance minister PTR Palanivel Thiagarajan also attended the seminar.

The delimitation is due in 2026 and the current limits are freezed according to the 84th amendment to the Constitution in 2001. Tharoor feels the ruling party may use

the majority in the parliament to overcome this glitch. The next delimitation will based on the 2021 census.

Many have expressed concern regarding delimitation as southern states have implemented population control pretty well compared to northern states. The number of Lok Sabha seats in each state are decided based on the population.
